Postmodern Valladolid / Valladolid posmoderna por Raúl Casamadrid

Atributo de los inadaptados es vivir a destiempo y contracorriente; Raúl Casamadrid insiste en ejercer tan extraña forma de vida. Se ha rebelado en contra de los hábitos de su tiempo (el hedonismo, el afán desmedido por tener la razón, la urgencia de innovación, la vulgar displicencia). Camina cauteloso, lento, por calles que son instantes reinventados por la memoria, por avenidas que devienen en prisiones circulares.  

Raúl compone entre callejones, baldíos, mustios portales coloniales, plazuelas, cementerios, surtidores, cuartos de hotel, puentes, muros que han visto ejecuciones y desdicha, jardines ocultos, cloacas. Todo puede llevar a todo en su ciudad.

Sus versos no condescienden con empresa alguna ni profesan una sola estética. Raúl compone a su ritmo y de pie. Rehúsa ser el poeta demiurgo, el arquitecto, el dios pequeño que rumia la aburrida inmortalidad. Ha elegido ser un ciudadano de a pie que escribe poemas, que no son el objeto de lujo de un burgués sino, como dice el antipoeta, "un artículo de primera necesidad”.

¿Qué suerte tuvo expresar que transfiero

intrépidas luces a buques piratas

si me enredo entre dobles palabras 

en tu lumbre de cubos de hielo?

No era humano quien gritó primero

sino animal: antes fue grito que alma.

Luego, partiste: custodié tus faldas,

llegué al hospital y me aplicaron suero.

Tu océano es mar en traje de neopreno

donde naufragan las luces que alucina el ciego

Am I my Brother's Keeper? By Bernard Block

Am I my Brother's Keeper? / ¿Soy el guardián de mi hermano? —represents the fifth in an ongoing series of bilingual poetry collections published by Darklight Publishing LLC.

The poet must find new words, new images, new forms to move us. In the first part of Am I my Brother’s Keeper?, Bernard Block addresses injustice, poverty or discrimination, attempting to touch us and arouse us to profound issues otherwise buried in the avalanche of "breaking news". The brightness of his language illuminates and dignifies the victims of tragic events, leaving a trail of sparks that lasts beyond the poem.

In the second part of this book, the poet arrives—or begins—as playing, to conjugate the language of infancy and war of the children, in verses inspired by Wordsworth's vision of childhood ironically mixed with surrealism and the language of Dada, of post World War I Europe. There the reader will find nostalgia, intimations of loss, apparitions in the mist.

In the final part of Am I my Brother’s Keeper? Who are we?: a spider, a king, a wall, a soldier, a Sherpa, a child of the sea, the Rose of Tacloban. There are no answers.

Bernard Block attempts to write "engaged" poetry inspired by Walt Whitman's "Poetry from the people, for the people" or perhaps Percy Bysshe Shelley, who In Defense of Poetry wrote: "Poetry animated by political events, a Visionary Poetry that inspires, shapes politics and alters lives. Visionary Poetry as an advanced guard of moral awakening."

SHANTY BY THE TRACKS

In Twin Branch, West Virginia where paved road

Gives way to dirt before winding up to pines,

In Twin Branch where life folds

And the graveyard has no signs

How’s John boy?  Sabrina asked Marie one white winter morn

Black dirt winding round the pines

John boy had another seizure the other night  said she

Staring past the graveyard, staring past the pines

He’s in the undertow  said she  in a hole

No way out  here in a shanty by the tracks

She drizzles honey on a homemade biscuit in a bowl

Stares at ants crawling round the cracks

I’m 30 years old, carrying my life in a pack

Said John boy as he stared across the track

Staring past the graveyard, past the pines

Staring down the bowl, looking for a sign

Momma Marie said  There ain’t no signs

Here in Twin Branch  in the shadow of the pines

The sun ain’t risen since the coal mine left the town

John boy dropped his spoon but it didn’t make a sound

As the undertow came in ‘neath the shadow of the pine

As John boy and Marie listened, listened for a sound

Am I my Broyher's Keeper? / ¿Soy el guardián de mi hermano?, bilingual edition, is now available through amazon.com and was translated into Spanish and edited by Roberto Mendoza Ayala; it contains six beautiful illustrations and a cover designed by the Mexican graphic artist Alonso Venegas Gómez.

Darklight Publishing LLC, was created in 2016 based in New York City to disseminate the poetic work of contemporary American and Latin American authors. Translation and editing are in the capable hands of teams of artists in Mexico and the United States. The bilingual series of books named "Bridges" was conceived seeking readers in our geographic hemisphere, where there is a broad exchange between the English and Spanish languages.

La autora presenta un libro de poesía en edición bilingüe inglés-español que reflexiona sobre la actual Ciudad de México, la urbe interna de sus habitantes y los resabios de las épocas pasadas. La obra contiene además dibujos y grabados del arquitecto Guillermo Rodríguez Camacho (1927-2008), así como un comentario de la poeta Blanca Luz Pulido.

The author presents a poetry book in an English-Spanish bilingual edition that reflects on the current Mexico City, the inner city of its inhabitants and the aftertastes of past ages. The work also contains drawings and engravings by the architect Guillermo Rodríguez Camacho (1927 – 2008), as well as a commentary by the mexican poet Blanca Luz Pulido.

In the Fire of Time / En el fuego del tiempo se presentó en el Centro Médico Nacional La Raza

El pasado viernes 27 de octubre a las 13:00 horas en el Auditorio No.1 del Centro Médico Nacional La Raza se llevó a cabo la presentación y lectura del libro In the Fire of Time / En el fuego del tiempo de la escritora María Ángeles Juárez.

En la mesa estuvo acompañada por su hija Midori Adelaida Valle Juárez, quien además de haber sido la ilustradora del libro, es una excelente hablante y estudiosa del idioma inglés por lo cual el público pudo apreciar en esta lengua algunos de los poemas de María Ángeles que fueron escritos originalmente en español y que fueron traducidos al inglés para esta edición internacional de carácter bilingüe.

Last Friday, October 27th at 1:00 pm in the Auditorium No.1 of the National Medical Center "La Raza" was held the presentation and reading of the book In the Fire of Time / En el fuego del tiempo by the writer María Ángeles Juárez.

She was accompanied by her daughter Midori Adelaida Valle Juárez, who besides being the illustrator of this book, is an excellent speaker and student of English, so the audience could appreciate in this language some of the poems of María Ángeles that were originally written in Spanish and translated into English for this international bilingual edition.

Trace / Traza de Iliana Rodríguez en el Museo José Luis Cuevas

El pasado 19 de octubre a las 7 pm, en el museo José Luis Cuevas, con el cobijo de la mirada de La Giganta, obra escultórica de este artista mexicano, se llevó a cabo con gran éxito la presentación del libro Trace / Traza de la poeta Iliana Rodríguez, quien fue acompañada en la mesa por los escritores Eduardo Cerecedo y María Ángeles Juárez.

Al final de la presentación, la escritora firmó varios de los ejemplares de su libro adquiridos por el público, que se llevó tanto en la memoria como en el papel el testimonio literario de Iliana Rodríguez, voz creciente en la lírica mexicana.

Last October 19th at 7 pm in the José Luis Cuevas museum, at the gaze of La Giganta (A Female Giant), sculptural work by this Mexican artist, was held with a great success the presentation of the book Trace / Traza by the poet Iliana Rodríguez, who was accompanied at the table by the writers Eduardo Cerecedo and María Ángeles Juárez.

At the end of the presentation, the writer signed several copies of her book acquired by the public, which will keep both in the memory and also in the printed words the literary testimony of Iliana Rodríguez, a growing voice in the Mexican lyric.

Gracias a María Ángeles Juárez, quien es coordinadora en México de nuestra editorial, así como también al valioso apoyo de Lucía Eva López, Darklight Publishing estuvo presente en la Feria Multicultural de Editoriales Independientes que se llevó a cabo en la Universidad Obrera de México del 28 de agosto al 3 de septiembre de 2017, donde el público pudo adquirir algunos de los primeros 4 títulos de nuestra colección Bridges de libros de poesía bilingües.
